As an overarching topic, the conference focuses on the prospects and challenges of globalisation, information communication technologies, social and cultural processes and how they relate to organisational actors, as they attempt to make sense of and respond to these complex processes. The emphasis is on what these processes mean for how organisations are (re)creating, developing and establishing new forms of organisational relationships. The 2012 conference gathered many researchers working within these broad areas.

Davide Nicolini gave the opening address, asking ...can the practice-based approach be of interest to IS scholars?. A video of the address can be viewed at vimeo.com/49367599

The Triangular Conference is the second annual triangular symposium organised jointly by Lancaster University, University of Cambridge and University College Dublin. The forum is co-chaired by Séamas Kelly, Lucas Introna, and Matthew Jones; bringing three schools and research programmes together to debate in an intimate, relaxed and informal setting.

The second triangular conference is hosted by the Centre for Innovation, Technology & Organisation (CITO), UCD School of Business.

Accepted Papers

The WIKI lists abstracts and full papers accepted for Triangular 2008.

Conference Benefits

Significant time will be allocated to each individual to present and discuss their research. We encourage you to consider this event as a forum for collective help giving and learning which requires attendees to diligently prepare and openly share their research difficulties with both faculty and peers. The faculty are committed to providing detailed feedback and also facilitate discussions around emergent themes. We expect a collage of conceptually and methodologically diverse presentations, provoking in-depth discussions in an informal and intimate setting.

Invited Speaker and Discussion

We are pleased to announce Professor Dermot Moran from UCD’s School of Philosophy as our invited speaker. Professor Moran will discuss phenomenology and re-examine its application into Organisation and IS studies. We anticipate that Professor Moran’s contribution (facilitated by Professor Lucas Introna) will bring fresh insights into Phenomenologically oriented IS and Organisational research and encourage an interesting discussion about its trajectories.
Call for Papers

The call for papers invites scholars from IS and organizational studies to present preliminary research findings and/or challenging theoretical and methodological issues concerning their research. Acceptance will be competitive and numbers limited. We welcome theoretically diverse papers encompassing Institutional Theory, Ethnomethodology, Phenomenology, Theories of Practice, Actor-Network Theory, and others. Research areas will cover a spectrum of settings and organisational challenges – for example, IS in developing countries, health care, business ethics, environmental issues, software development, IS implementation and adoption, and E-government.

An introduction...

The Centre for Innovation, Technology & Organisation (CITO) is home to a multi-disciplinary research community that is broadly concerned with understanding the role played by information, knowledge and information and communication technologies (ICT) in organisational processes, both within and between business corporations and broader social institutions. More specifically, a key focus of the Centre's research activities is on understanding the dynamics of ICT-enabled organisational change, and on developing approaches and implications for the management of IS innovation.

The research activities of CITO are focused on understanding the relationship between innovation, technology and organisation, and the associated policy and management implications. Our approach is guided by the assumption that a sophisticated understanding of information and technology, and their role in the constitution of social and organisational life, should be based on an appreciation of how such artefacts come to be embedded within broader institutional (organisational, cultural, economic, political) contexts. As such, our research work is concerned with in-depth empirical studies of information systems implementation and use that are especially attentive to the underlying social relations within which such systems are embedded. We are committed to developing appropriate theoretical perspectives for illuminating such processes by drawing from a variety of intellectual traditions, including philosophy, sociology, political science, psychology, economics and organisation theory. The emphasis is on the pragmatic use of theory to make tangible and insightful contributions to management practice.

CITO’s work focuses on several research streams:

Understanding and managing ICT-enabled social/ organisational change (IS innovation)

Knowledge, innovation and organisation

ICT and new modes of organising in a globalised world

The production and consumption of technological artefacts

These streams aim to develop understanding of the relationship between ICT and social/organisational transformation, including the role that ICT may play in facilitating innovative or virtual forms of organising based on new modes of communication, co-ordination, collaboration, and surveillance and
control. This has direct implications for the work of information management and the informatisation of social/ organisational processes, Knowledge creation and management. Our analysis is informed theoretically and empirically by paying attention to the practice of IS implementation/innovation; practices associated with IS strategy formation, evaluation, design and development, and the management of technological change.

The fifth Quadrangular Conference.

The Quadrangular Conference is an annual event between Cambridge University, Lancaster University, University College Dublin, and LSE.

This year will be the fifth annual event and will be hosted by Lancaster University.

This year’s conference takes its name and focuses from the department of Organisation, Work and Technology.

In previous years, The PhD Quadrangular Conference was organised through a thematically-focussed call-for-papers. This year the invitation focused on PhD students and was left open to thesis-specific proposals. This was a means towards inclusivity and accommodating changing trends in research. From this open call, three sessions of focus have emerged:

Innovation, Technology and Organisation

Practice, Policy and Organising

Knowledge: Managing, Sharing, Impacting

In addition to these sessions being a useful platform for the PhD participants to present and receive feedback on their work, they also provide an account of the current research interests developing across the four institutions.

Building on the previous years' success, the event provides an exceptional opportunity for PhD students to get in-depth feedback on their work from senior faculty members outside their own institution. The conference draws together a number of distinguished scholars to help novice academics at different stages of their projects to conduct successful research and develop contributions for the disciplines of information systems and organization studies. This year's conference will be co-chaired by Cambridge (Matthew Jones), Lancaster (Prof. Lucas Introna), University College Dublin (Prof. Robert Johnston, Séamas Kelly) and LSE (Prof. Jannis Kallinikos, Shirin Madon) with a keynote speech by Professor Lucy Suchman.

About the Seminar Series

The Centre for Innovation, Technology and Organisation is concerned with exploring a range of perspectives that depart from conventional thinking about management theory and practice, and its role in the development of the contemporary world. The emphasis is on approaches to understanding management, organisation, business and technology that are based on social constructionist perspectives on the world (and, thus, centred on issues of process, meaning and power).

The group is particularly interested in empirically grounded work (regardless of whether this is based on qualitative or quantitative research approaches) that attempts to develop and extend theory and to relate it to management practice.

To facilitate productive inter-disciplinary exchange, speakers from diverse cognate disciplines have been invited to present their research and the theoretical ideas that underpins their work, to demonstrate its practical usefulness for understanding aspects of organisational life. Contributions are solicited from researchers working within a wide range of management disciplines (including organisation theory, accounting, information systems, marketing, industrial relations and HRM).
