UCD IT Breakfast and News

At the recent IT Breakfast held at UCD's Smurfit School of Business, Dr Stefan Klein reviewed developments in mobile communications and their application for distributed virtual teams. With the Boeing-Rocketdyne case study Dr Klein explored how workgroups adapt to technology and how technology can be adapted to the workgroup, the implications on and of organizational structures, and how adaptations may represent on-going opportunistic attempts to counter misalignments. The example illustrated some of the research themes of CITO, particularly the areas of innovative or virtual forms of organizing based on new modes of communication, co-ordination, and collaboration. Membership of networks such as CeTIM, VE-Forum and the Openscape project highlights the involvement of members of the department working at the cutting edge of organization, information technology research.

The slides from the presentation are now available for download in PDF format from the Department web site here (n.b. 2.32 MB zip file).

In its E-THURSDAY section, the Irish Independent carried an article on the event as reported by Ian Campbell (Editor of siliconrepublic.com), more details at mis.ucd.ie/news.

The breakfast meeting was the first in a series of meetings and we will keep you informed of future events.

Collaboration at UCD

The Management Information Systems Department in the Faculty of Commerce at UCD is actively involved in a number of research collaborations on a European level, with corporations and public institutions. Our goal is to extend the existing collaborations and build a community of corporate partners around the department in order to facilitate a mutually beneficial exchange of expertise. The MIS Department at UCD provides a wide spectrum of collaboration opportunities ranging from attending its series of Academic Seminars, through to joint R&D projects and consultancy. How can you become involved with the MIS Department?

  • Do you need an academic partner to work with you on R&D projects for your industry?
  • Are you interested in conducting collaborative research with members of the department (e.g. in the area of IT support for virtual teams)?
  • Are you able to grant research access for post-graduate and PhD students?
  • Could you host student internships in your organisation?
  • Are you prepared to participate in student projects?
  • Attend seminars, meetings and conferences hosted by the Department.
  • Stay in touch via the web.

If you or your colleagues are interested in collaboration with us, we are happy to talk with you. You can contact us via the web, email, phone, and in person. Details at http://mis.ucd.ie
