Steven Jackson from the Department of Information Science, Cornell University will be giving a talk in the School of Information and Library Studies (SILS) on: Rethinking Repair
This talk argues against the relative absence of breakdown, maintenance and repair work in the academic and cultural stories we tell about technology. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with artists and repair communities in the United States, Africa and elsewhere, and recent post-humanist strains in information science and social theory, it examines the work of repair as crucial and understudied moments at which more durable human relationships with technology get practiced, imagined, and built. In particular, it explores maintenance and repair work as sites of innovation, power, and ethical relations of care in our relationships with technology and with each other.
