Key Theme: Practice, Politics and Ethics in Ethnographic Research
The key theme for this year’s symposium, ‘Practice, Politics and Ethics in Ethnographic Research’, is designed to attract papers that consider the political and ethical challenges involved in conducting critical ethnographic research, and the extent to which ethnography is at ‘risk’ from much closer forms of regulation and control researchers now face in light of the emergence of much more stringent ‘ethical approval’ policies and requirements set by University ‘research ethics’ committee, government research funding bodies and other research grant awarding bodies and institutions. Papers that consider the extent to which ethnographic research is likely to be unduly restricted and potentially threatened by these developments, and whether or not ethnographers should challenge or simply learn to adapt to the dominant moral certainty and universal authority of ethical research codes of practice, would be particularly welcome at this year’s event.
