Once the domain of cartographers and other specialists, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasing being employed by the business community. This talk focuses on how GIS is applied in the real world through rigorous case study analyses of twenty companies, including Baystate Health, Chico’s, Kaiser Permanente, Lamar Advertising Company, Norwich Union, Rand McNally, Southern Company, Sears Roebuck, and Sperry Van Ness. It includes the expanding roles of GIS and spatial technologies in the Web and Mobile environments, and considers the ethical, legal, and security issues of these technologies. It ends up by examining the competitiveness of GIS for organisations.
Prof Pick's research concerns Management Information Systems, Geographic Information Systems, Urban geography, and population. He has published ten books and over 100 journal articles, book chapters, and refereed proceedings on these topics. Prof Pick is the leading researcher on the Business Applications of GIS, in addition to his journal publications and book chapters he has edited the foremost research book on the field, Geographic Information Systems in Business and is the author of the recent leading business GIS textbook Geo-Business: GIS in the Digital Organization.
