Dr Frances (Francie)Viggiani, Associate Professor of Management and Organizational Behavior at the College of Business, Alfred University New York, will be visiting with the Management subject area for the month of April while on sabbatical. Her research centers on Organization Development and Workplace Democratization; Participatory Culture and the Culture of Emotions in Democratic Hierarchies. She has taught in the area of gender and during her current sabbatical is working on a study of three US centers for Employee Ownership (in California, Ohio and Vermont) - their histories, roles, and impact.

The presentation will cover

  1. general definitions and history of "democracy in the workplace" in the US and several EU countries;
  2. facts and figures about the phenomenon (e.g. US, Italian and Spanish cooperatives; ESOPs in the US, UK and Ireland; conventional corporations with highly participatory management and/or HR practices);
  3. Dr Francie Viggiani's current research.
