Introduction to Computers and Information Systems

In today’s competitive and complex business environments, information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) are essential tools for business organisations. Consequently, computers and information systems have become an important part of our everyday work and social environments. As members of society, it is important to understand what computers and information systems are all about. As future business professionals, it is especially important to know how to use and apply these technologies.

The objectives of this course are to provide students with basic knowledge about computers and information systems, and to help them develop the skills needed to use and take advantage of these technologies. The course is comprised of two hours of lectures plus two hours of practical “hands-on” tutorials per week. The topics covered include an overview of computer hardware, operating and applications software, word-processing, spreadsheet design, software development, an introduction to the role of information and information systems in business, and discussion of the social impacts of computing.
