The Future’s Bright, the Future’s Mobile
from 03:00 PM to 04:00 PM
This CITO research seminar will be held in Q233 at 3pm on Monday June 6 2011.
Software work is often depicted in the literature as a ‘sunrise occupation’, consisting of highly technical employees that are able to craft stable careers. In this paper, the aim is to question this account and examine some of the current challenges facing the IT workforce. This is provided in the context of wider socio-economic trends and developments in product and technology markets, which frame working practices. In order to guide the study, the under-researched and emerging area of mobile applications development will be investigated, with a particular focus on Apple and Google development platforms. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork in Sweden, the UK, and the US, developers’ experiences are analysed to illustrate how they cope with increasingly precarious and insecure working conditions and adapt to shifting labour market requirements.
