I will present my own understanding of J.J. Gibson's Ecological Approach to perception and action. This is an anticognitivist orientation which I find attractive for discussing routine action and the way IS might support routine action. The notion of affordance also connects with themes in phenomenology such as readiness-to-hand. I will to discuss the common misunderstanding that affordances are objective properties of things and suggest that they are more interesting that this ontologically.
